Parser is designed to aid academic and other researchers in the computer analysis of English text. Input in the form of a plain ASCII text file is analyzed a sentence at a time, and a "verticalized" output file is generated, in which each word or punctuation symbol is classified with one of up to 100 part-of-speech tags, the tagset being under user control. Parser can handle arbitrarily large text files, and process them at about 25,000 words per hour (on a 20 MHz 80386 machine). At the core of the program is a state-of-the-art parsing engine, which is integrated with a very large phrase-structure grammar (several thousand rules) and lexicon (several hundred thousand entries). Utility programs are provided to generate reports in various formats, including alphabetically sequenced lists of words and/or parts-of-speech, with or without counts. The program is equipped with a graphical user interface, with menus for selection of the various options, and a context-sensitive help facility.
